ILUKA SAX-WILLIAMS
INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIAN ARTIST | MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA (WURUNDJERI COUNTRY)
I’m Iluka Sax-Williams, a multidisciplinary artist with deep roots to the Taungurung people of the Kulin Nation and the Torres Strait Islands.
Based in Naarm (Melbourne), my diverse practice encompasses visual art, dance, fashion, and design, all enriched by my cultural heritage and ancestral connections. I am dedicated to preserving and sharing Indigenous practices through community-focused educational initiatives. My work includes hosting workshops on Possum Skin Cloaks, pyrography, and immersive art experiences, aimed at fostering awareness and appreciation of Indigenous traditions.
A notable highlight of my career is my pyrography work on kangaroo skin, titled Woora Liwik. This piece, exhibited at the 10th Koorie Heritage Trust Art Show (2022-2023), earned the RMIT Emerging Artist Award and has been featured in the Rising Melbourne Art Trams 2024. Additionally, my work has been showcased at Craft Victoria in 2022 and 2023, and I was commissioned for the ‘Making the Metro Tunnel Exhibition’ at Domain House Gallery, Melbourne.
