KULIN SEASONAL DIAL
“The Kulin Seasonal Dial begins with the dance of celestial rhythms at its heart, where the Summer and Winter Solstices mark the pivotal transitions.
Summer’s embrace sees our waterways flow vastly through the land, inviting diverse species of birds to grace the Kulin Nation with their many songs, sounds and presence.
The Moon marks the entrance of the Winter Solstice beckoning with its somber days and darker nights, covering the land in a veil of colder winds and nourishing rains. Ancient watercourses swell anew, birthing vibrant life that traverses the land.
Rooted at the bottom of both halves, a resilient tree stands as a timeless witness to the changes of existence. Embodying its own enduring seasons, it nurtures and sustains the surrounding world, a guardian whose generosity spans generations.
Encompassing the intricate design lies a constellation of Seasonal Indicators, each a small testament to the rhythms and delicate cycles of our natural world. These markers are a fraction of the unfolding changes across the Kulin Seasons, but illuminates the profound interconnectedness between time, ecology, and the ever-evolving environment."
I want to extend a big Ngun Godjin to Baluk Arts, along with their talented members, for their creative contributions to this remarkable art piece. Additionally, I would like to thank Mornington Peninsula Shire for their generous funding of this commissioned project.
I wish to honour the memory of the late Dr. Beth Gott from the School of Biological Sciences at Monash University. Her profound dedication to the study of Victorian Aboriginal flora and fauna has been a significant source of inspiration throughout my research journey. Furthermore, I draw inspiration from Museum Victoria’s ‘Kulin Seasonal Calendar’, which beautifully encapsulates the essence of the 7 Kulin Seasons.
Lastly, I wish to express my appreciation to Ellen Sayers and Too Far Gone Screen Printing for their exceptional craftsmanship in bringing forth this incredible work of art."
